Getting hitched on Valentine’s Day?

The legend of St. Valentine is full of ambiguity.  One legend reads that when Valentine was a priest during third century Rome, Emperor Claudius II made the decision that unmarried single men without families made better soldiers.  As a result, he outlawed marriage for young men.  Valentine was outraged and so he performed marriages for young lovers in private.  When Claudius discovered his actions, Valentine was sentenced to death.

Another myth tells the tale of a Valentine who was imprisoned for helping Christians escape Roman prisons.  In confinement, Valentine was visited several times by a young girl he was in love with.  He gave her the first Valentine greeting ever from jail—it read “from your Valentine,” an expression still used to this day.

As a tribute to the sympathetic, heroic and most of all romantic man who was St. Valentine, I have collected some of the most beautiful things ever uttered in the name of love.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

“What lies behind us, and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”

The great American essayist, poet, lecturer, and philosopher of the 19th century.  A Boston native, Emerson led the mid-century Transcendentalist Movement which launched with the writing of his famous essay ‘Nature’ that displays his focus on the relationship between the soul and the surrounding world.

William Shakespeare

“My bounty is as boundless as the sea, My love as deep; the more I give to thee, The more I have, for both are infinite.”  –Romeo & Juliet

I am sure you all know William Shakespeare, which I am glad of because there is no way to sum up in a few words this brilliant poet and playwright who is considered to this day to be the greatest writer of the English language.

Dr. Suess

“You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams”

Born Theodor Suess Geisel, Dr. Suess was the well-known poet, cartoonist, and above all writer of children’s literature.  He published 46 children’s books in his lifetime, including popular titles like The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, and of course How the Grinch Stole Christmas.  One fun fact about Dr. Suess:  though his children’s books were relatively short in comparison to a full-length novel, it wasn’t uncommon for him to take an entire year to write one of his rhyming stories.

St. Augustine

“Better to have loved and lost, than to never have loved at all.”

Would you expect this man above to say such a beautiful quote about love?  St. Augustine was a Roman and the bishop of Hippo, which is present day Algeria, for the Roman province of Africa in the late 300’s A.D. St. Augustine was a Father of the Church and his writings have shaped much of Western Christianity and philosophy.  This is a very wise man we’re talking about…just check out some of his other famous quotations here to get a buzz.

Joan Crawford

“Love is a fire.  But whether it is going to warm your hearth or burn down your house, you can never tell.”

Joan Crawford, born Lucille Fay LeSueur, was an American actress of film and theatre in the early 1900s.  After working on Broadway and then small film roles, Crawford made her big break in 1945’s Mildred Pierce for which she won an Oscar for her performance.  My favorite Crawford film?  Her horrifying but stunning performance in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?

Did you enjoy the love quotes I chose?  Am I missing your favorite?

Please share!  And have a Happy Valentine’s Day!
