Olympic Equestrian Patient

As an accomplished Olympic equestrian and successful entrepreneur with his own international public relations firm, Wellington’s Mason Phelps Jr. had plenty to smile about. But he rarely did so, especially in public.

“I wasn’t going to smile. I had a chip in my tooth in the front because I’d fallen off a horse way back when, and I’d never taken care of it. And being a coffee drinker and smoker, my teeth weren’t very attractive,” Phelps explained. “I was very self-conscious about smiling in front of the camera. And I found myself in front of the camera quite often because of this business, as the chairman of the National Horse Show or different charity events.”

Enter Dr. Sam Sadati and his staff at the Sadati Center for Aesthetic Dentistry in Wellington.

Phelps made an appointment for an initial consultation in March 2005. Phelps said he considered Dr. Sadati because the talented dentist came highly recommended and boasted an impressive list of credentials including accredited membership in the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

“Dentists are not my thing. I don’t like going to dentists,” Phelps admitted. But any reservations Phelps had were erased after his first consultation with Dr. Sadati. “There was a great comfort level once I met him and did the interview with him and his staff.”

Phelps was equally impressed with Dr. Sadati’s office, with was nationally recognized as the “Best Dental Office Design of the Year” in 2005- “The office is fabulous! You can listen to music or watch movies. They couldn’t be nicer and more accommodating.” Phelps said.

Other luxuries at the Sadati Center for Aesthetic Dentistry include massage chairs, aromatherapy, paraffin hand treatments, warm blankets and warm neck pillows.

Dr. Sadati said he also offers “anxiety-free dentistry” through a sedation technique called anxiolysis. An oral sedative calms patients during their visit and offers an amnesia effect so they have no memory of the treatment after leaving the office, Dr, Sadati explained.

After the consultation, Phelps decided to undergo a total mouth restoration. “The first thing he did was organize my dental hygiene,” Phelps said.

Organizing Phelps’ dental hygiene included extracting one tooth on the bottom to relive the overcrowding in his mouth and correcting his bite pattern with braces. Phelps also underwent intense periodontal therapy and a rigorous home regimen for good dun health.

“A very important part of out practice is to make sure if we do restorations on somebody, the foundation is great. We don’t want to jump and do some cosmetic work on someone who doesn’t take care of his gums,” Dr. Sadati said, adding that Phelps was an excellent patient. “We were extremely impressed with his home care.”

It took several visits over a period of months to prepare all 31 of Phelps’ remaining teeth for the cosmetic restorations, including veneers and crowns. After every single appointment I would get a phone call on my cell phone in the evening. He personally called me to check on me and ask, ‘are you OK, how do you feel, are there any areas of concern?’ I was thrilled,” Phelps recalled. It’s just the level of professionalism on the part of Dr. Sadati that I am most impressed with.”

After almost a year, Phelps was finally ready for a set of temporary restorations. The extended timeframe was due in part to the braces and Phelps’ demanding schedule, which often delayed his appointments.

The temporary restorations serve as trial teeth, Dr. Sadati explained. “We want to make sure a patient can function and like their temporaries before we give them the permanent ones,” he said. “If there are any adjustments that need to be made, we always do it on the temporaries.”

A few weeks later, Phelps was in his permanent restorations – and he’s still smiling. “Much to my surprise, it wasn’t a painful experience. I’ve had no problems, no pain, no discomfort,” Phelps said. “The end result is what you see today, and I couldn’t be happier. Mow I’m happy to have a real smile, and I smile in front of the camera!”

Working with Dr. Sadati changed Phelps’ life, and he would highly recommend the procedure to others.

“I certainly would recommend this to anybody who is self -conscious about their smile,” he said. “If anybody has the slightest bit of hesitation or reservation, it doesn’t cost you a dime to go down and get the consultation. And I would recommend everybody give it a shot.”

Dr. Sadati agreed and extends the invitation to everyone, especially those who may believe nothing can be done to help their smile. “I wasn’t people to know that there are a lot of options in dentistry,” he said. “New science, technology and art together are helping us make a difference for many people who did not think they could be helped. And if people think they need dental work, the sooner they take care of it the better.”

Phelps is glad he visited Dr. Sadati’s office. “A lot of people have commented that my teeth look great and I have a great smile, so I couldn’t be happier,” he said.
